The Brenton Cove Racing Program is customized for youth sailors serious about racing Optis, Lasers and C420s. Fundamentally, the program is designed to provide a comprehensive and intensive training / practice and racing format. From local regattas in Narragansett Bay (both team and fleet racing) to traveling to regional and national events, the racing program is about creating opportunities for racing experience.
C420 Team Working to Windward Optis Rounding the Leeward Mark
The Brenton Cove Racing Program was created in partnership with Sail Newport BOD and Executive Staff and the Ida Lewis YC BOD and Flag Officers in late 2009. The program aims to foster increased opportunities for competitive sailors from the two programs and for sailors Bay wide looking for a serious competitive seasonal program. The program allows Sail Newport and Ida Lewis Yacht Club to take advantage of improved resource opportunities created through this cooperation.
The Brenton Cove Racing Program is designed for sailors serious about racing Optis, Laser Radials and C420s at all levels with coaches best suited to help them meet their individual sailing and racing goals. Teamwork and sportsmanship is stressed in a supportive environment. The coach/sailor ratio for Optis will be a min. of 6 and max. of 8, for Laser Radials, 5 boat min. and 7 boat max., and for the C420s 4 boats min. and 6 boats max. per coach. Coaches in the program have a high degree of technical knowledge and skill, and have several years of competitive coaching experience, and they are focused solely on working with the team for which they are hired.
Management of the program is a cooperative effort with day-to-day management of the program handled by program directors Kelsey Crowther (Ida Lewis Yacht Club) and Kim Hapgood (Sail Newport).
2017 Summer Program Dates and Practice Schedule
The downloadable PDF below reflects the practice schedule and regatta schedule for each team: Opti Green, Opti Champ, Laser Radial and C420. Please note that the schedule is subject to change, especially when it comes to regattas, and will be updated as changes occur.
Practices for all teams run 9 am - 4 pm. A typical practice will start with rigging and boat set-up, a classroom theory session and land drills followed by practice on the water. After lunch, which is either taken onshore, or OTW, a briefing on the morning's practice, a review of the afternoon's plan, and more OTW practice. The end of practice is followed by a debrief of the day, de-rigging and clean-up. On days when the whether does not permit sailing (no wind, storms, etc.) coaches focus on theory and strategy, take advantage of the opportunity to review video from prior practices and physical training.
Unlike the youth dinghy program, there is no lottery for the BCRP C420, Laser Radial, Opti Championship and Green Fleet programs. At a minimum, candidates for the program are expected to be knowledgeable about the rigging of their boat, should be able to demonstrate correct sail trim on all points of sail, and be comfortable sailing in close quarters with other sailors in all conditions. Acceptance to the program is based on skills, experience, interest and commitment. There are also some general guidelines as to min. weights and or heights that are appropriate for sailors in different classes. Read below for further info on specific classes/teams. Admission for each team is on a rolling basis until the team quota is reached. Please contact us if you have any questions as to the appropriate class for your sailor to be racing!
Opti Green Fleet Sailors:
Green Fleet is the gateway to the world of Opti racing. At a minimum, candidates for the program are expected to be knowledgeable about the rigging of their boat, should be able to demonstrate correct sail trim on all points of sail, and be comfortable sailing in close quarters with other boats in a wide range of conditions. Sailors come out of recreational youth programs where they may have done an intro to racing type class, some will have sailed in a shoulder season (fall or spring) Green Fleet program. Others are simply Opti sailors coming out of intermediate or advanced classes who want to try their hand at racing Optis, and who are ready to make the commitment to a summer of learning how to make a square box go fast, how to navigate around a race course, and what all the flags they see and whistles and horns they hear, mean. Age range is 9 - 13 years.
The Green Fleet Team sails a regatta schedule that includes all the NBYA day regattas and Jr. Race Week, and one regional event, typically the USODA Opti New Englands. Please refer to the BCRP 2017 Practice and Regatta Schedule for specifics.
Opti Championship Fleet Sailors:
Typically will range from those with a season of Green Fleet racing under their belts, to those who have sailed on the USODA National Team and traveled extensively. As a general guide, Opti racing sailors range from 60 lbs - 110 lbs, and as tall as 5' 5". Age range 10 - 15 years.

As a general guide, Laser Radial need to be 14 years of age and a min. of 115 lbs to participate and be able to handle the boat safely.

Tight quarters, watchful eyes!
First season BCRP sailors who do not have a boat (or in the case of C420 sailors, are not partnered with someone who has their own boat), may charter a boat for $350 (ten Opti's for Opti Green sailors, 4 Laser Radials, and a total of 10 spots - 5 boats for C420 sailors are available). Assigned as paid applications are received till they're all spoken for. All other sailors are expected to provide their own boat, or in the case of C420 sailors, to partner with a sailor who has a boat. Please contact us if you currently do not have a boat as we can work with you to find a boat that will fit your budget.
Sailing Partners (C420 sailors)
Most C420 sailors in the program have a partner whom they plan to sail with, and we strongly encourage C420 sailors to come with a partner, someone with whom they are familiar and share common competitive goals. However it is not uncommon that C420 sailors, particularly those in their first or second year of competitive sailing may not have settled in with a specific sailing partner (either skipper or crew). For sailors in their first season of racing C420s, the coaches will rotate sailors in and out of helming and crewing so that they can learn both positions, even though they will go on to favor and specialize in one or the other. Please contact Kim Hapgood for assistance in finding a skipper / crew to sail with, or if you have any questions about partners.
The fee for BCRP is $1450 per sailor and includes coaching at all practices and designated regattas (min. of 34 days in 2017!).

Sailors are responsible for regatta entry fees and class memberships: USODA for Opti sailors, C420 for C420 sailors and Laser for Laser Radial sailors. Sailors will also need to join NBYA and US Sailing as a Junior Member, if they are not already covered under a Family Membership.
Additional fees to cover the expense of coach housing and/or transportation will be charged for regattas outside of the NBYA area, where necessary. These fees will be determined by the number of sailors attending the event, and charged at the conclusion of the particular event.
Financial aid for program fees, and grants for regatta related expenses, are available. Please see the application for further information.
A minimum deposit is required at the time an application is submitted for the program. If for any reason, a sailor is turned down for the program, the deposit will be refunded 100%. A sailor who withdraws from the program prior to March 15, will receive a full refund of any fees paid, less a $25 administrative fee. After March 15, the administrative fee increases to $50. There is NO refund for sailors who withdraw from the program after May 1 unless the spot is filled or there are extenuating circumstances which are handled on a case by case basis.
